The papers are signed. The money has been transferred. You’ve even received your keys to the front door — and the garage opener, the back door key, and a random key to that door in the basement that has little purpose. The eagerness to inhabit your new space is pushing you to move everything into your new home as soon as possible, but take a second to breathe and think. Buying a house is a hasty, stressful and exciting experience in Colorado’s Real Estate market, but that doesn’t mean the space you’ve bought is the home space you envisioned — yet! It’s time to make your new house the home of your dreams.

If you’re lucky enough to spend a few days transforming the interior of your home before moving in you’ll save a lot of hassle down the road. The first thing you want to consider are the walls. Are they comfortable with your aesthetic? If not: paint them now, before the furniture and pictures crowd the space. Do you want wood floors or carpets? Are you going so far as to add an island in the kitchen, or a small remodel of a room — then the days before you move in are the prime days to do the handiwork that’ll transform this new space into your sanctuary.

Once the big projects are out of the way start moving all your treasures into your new palace. As the furniture cosies up along the walls and the area rugs bring the next level of vibrance you’ll probably start to see the little things that don’t cohabitate well. Maybe the fixtures in the kitchen don’t fit the style of your table or cutlery; perhaps the door knobs are too rustic for your modern appeal; maybe the bathroom’s cabinet or faucets are old and need an updating. That’s great! Having projects around the home after you’ve moved in help you nest and build the feeling of proud ownership in the atmosphere manifested by your own hands.

With the interior set up and filled with your heart, sweat, and inspiration you can start to think about your growing spaces. What sort of space do you want to create outside for yourself, guests, or passersby? Will you be setting up a vegetable garden, or maybe landscaping the front to add color and pizazz? Perhaps planting a few flowers around the walkways will be enough, but make sure to add that special touch that speaks to you everytime you approach the house. Leave no place untouched by your presence and you’ll truly feel at home!

Even though the process of purchasing a house can be daunting, we understand what it takes to make a space feel like home. That’s what The Wise Team looks at when helping you find that space; analyzing not just price and square footage, but how the space works for you and your family. Whenever a realtor shows their listings, make sure to get personal with them – talk about the transformations you want to make in the space, the community in which you want to live, how you use your home. It’ll help us find the right home for you in more than just a house.
